Design with the flow of the document, not with position: absolute. Cross-browser compatilility should be a MUST, not a bonus. PSD to HTML is okay, if you know how to do it.

When doing a PSD you should always have the performance in mind. Too many graphics/effects will slow down loading time/rendering of the site.

I agree with you on this - definitely for some clients/projects. But its not always possible to do. Especially showing a client working prototype instead of PSD design. Because few clients ask for many changes that would take lot of time to change if done on html/css, rather than PSD.

I prefer going onto prototype once basic PSD wireframe & design is confirmed. Because that makes xhtml/css lot easier.

Moreover writing or designing for modern browsers is really helpful to developers like you and me, when site target visitors are computer savvy or at-least keep their browsers upgraded.

If majority of target visitors are still using IE6, then you need to take care for those too. So we always ask client to decide what way he wants to do. And charge accordingly. Otherwise, it will be a waste of time to design in and for browsers.

the photoshop section is debatable. you should already know what is possible in code when you're doing the mockup in photoshop.

you're right about the slicing part though.

I do agree on the result that In some cases, a project may require writing multiple style sheets per display or browser that enhances the presentation drastically in order to render your site effectively, but in other cases it may be just a matter of letting the site devolve naturally.,,
